1. Rooftop Films
Movies are better in the summer! There are a number of movie options and outdoor venue’s to watch them. Just look for the park closest to you and see what movie they have playing, get your friends together, a blanket and enjoy watching a movie on a huge screen outdoors. Aside from being free, it’s a better experience to watch a movie you love in a place other than a movie theater. Luckily, they are being shown throughout the summer, but here is a list of movies in June. 2. Global Running Day
Get active for a good reason, besides working on your summer body. On June 7th, you can run with New York Road Runners (NYRR), the organization behind the TCS NYC Marathon. Global Running Day is a worldwide celebration of the sport and activity to run and get active. It’s about fun and fitness for people of all ages. Whether you’re a regular runner or first timer, it’s a chance to get together and celebrate staying active.
3. Seasonal highlights Tour
Spend the day smelling the roses, literally. The Brooklyn Botanic Garden offers the Seasonal Highlights Tour, where you can see the BBG’s burgeoning blossoms at their best and other highlights of the season in this free Garden-wide guided walk. With options of dates from June 6,7,8, 2017 from 1 p.m.–2 p.m, the tour is an opportunity to see the memorable flowers from the season and walk around the different gardens. 4. Natural Perfume Blending
Another tour offered at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden on Saturday, June 10, 2017 from 1 p.m.–4:30 pm is an opportunity to learn about perfumery. It’s an adult workshop that examines the art of natural perfumery, explore perfume ingredients and formulation, and leave with two bottles of your own perfume. It’s a fun way to learn something new and spend a Saturday with friends who would be interested in perfume and learning how it’s made. 5. Big Apple Barbecue Block Party
The Big Apple Barbecue Block Party is your opportunity to have an authentic barbecue in NYC’s Madison Square Park. It’s a big food fest to join with people who have similar tastes as you and who want to come together and enjoy eating BBQ. This year’s event will feature pit-masters from New York City—representing local favorites Dinosaur, Blue Smoke and Brooklyn’s Hometown. The annual fest is occurring from June 10-11 and is $10 a plate. Besides eating BBQ there will also be beer and music to enjoy and add to the whole experience.
6. The Museum Mile
If you’re feeling worldly or wish to broaden your horizons but don’t want to travel too far, there is a museum hop on Fifth Avenue 82nd- 105th streets. On June 13th, from 6-9pm seven museums will give free admission and present a street festival in a celebration of art and music. So, if you’ve been meaning to check out an exhibit at either the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Academy Museum and El Museo del Barrio, but have been pushing it off, make sure to check the website for more information and enjoy the mile-long block party. museummilefestival.org/
7. Coney Islands Mermaid Parade
June 17th is your one chance a year to dress up like a mermaid and completely blend in. The Coney Island Mermaid Parade is one of NYC’s events where people dress up as mermaids and march through the neighborhood. Thousands of people are drawn to the event to watch King Neptune and Queen Mermaid lead a procession of be-glittered semi-nude people coming together. If you’ve always wanted to dress up as Ariel, don’t forget to get your costume and join the fun!
8. Monster Jam in East Rutherford
While this event is not in NYC, it is interesting enough to be on our list. Monster Jam is a live motorsport event where individuals compete in races or freestyle competitions in monster trucks. It takes place in East Rutherford, New jersey on June 17th. This is a fun and different way to spend your Saturday night and would only cost $20 a ticket. Summers are for trying new things and having different experiences, this is a chance to try something new.
9. Time Out Pool Party
When the temperature is too hot in the city, New Yorkers struggle with limited options for fun activities while cooling down. Time out has a pool party on June 21st for people who don’t want to travel far to enjoy being in the water. Tell your friends and plan a day around swimming at the McCarren Hotel & Pool at 6:30pm. Don’t forget to purchase tickets to be able to attend, prices vary from $49-$55.
10. Wonder Wheel Amusement Park
When you think of summer, you think long days by the beach, ice cream, bike rides and fireworks. To see the first fireworks of the summer, you have to go to Wonder Wheel Amusement Park on Friday June 23rd. You could spend the whole day at the amusement park and stay until 9:30pm when they have their first fireworks show and karaoke. The park is in Coney Island, so you could spend the day walking around the boardwalk or on rides. then end the day with fireworks and karaoke which closes at 11pm.
11. Sunset Sail Happy Hour
Take your usual happy hour setting to the water. The Sunset Sail Happy Hour takes place on June 28th at 6:30 pm at Pier 15. You can drink your favorite cocktails while looking at the famous NYC skyline. It’s a good chance of pace to finish work on Wednesday to unwind on a pretty boat and a few drinks. Get a few friends together and reserve your spots for $20.
12. John Legend
You have two opportunities to see John Legend live at Madison Square Garden this summer. He is performing on June 27th and 28th at 8 pm. You could see him perform all his hits live and hope for a famous opening act as well. Concerts are a fun part of summer where you can enjoy seeing your favorite artists perform live and sing along to your favorite songs. Don’t miss out on seeing some of your favorite artists perform live.
13. Midtown Concerts
Since concerts are so popular in the summer, St. Bartholomew’s Church in Midtown is having free concerts every Thursday in June until the 29th. Concerts begin at 1:15pm and last 40 minutes with performances from 41 different ensembles and performers. The performers were selected from a pool of more than 70 applicants and is courtesy of Gotham Early Music Scene. You don’t need a ticket or a reservation to attend, just an open mind about different genres and styles that can be performed.
14. Tour and Wine tasting at rooftop reds.
Experience the world’s first rooftop vineyard in Brooklyn’s Navy Yard. As the first harvest is taking place in October, this is a chance to tour the vineyard, taste the rooftops red wine and take in the views. You can make a reservation to spend an hour lounging in a hammock, trying different red wines and learning about the process. Prices start at $30 and all guests get 20% off purchases. Spots are filling up fast, so you have to make your reservations early to work with you and your friend’s schedules. 15. Sail the Park
Something that appears in a lot of NYC movies that you can participate in is Sail in the Park. You can race your own sailboat or watch as the dozens of other sailboats race. Central Parks Conservatory Water offers small sailboats that are powered by wind and the user has a remote to control the direction of the sailboat. It is open to the general public until November 23rd, the sailboats are first come first serve and $11 for thirty minutes, so plan your day accordingly. Pretend you’re in a movie for a day with this activity.
16. Pumpkin Picking at Decker Farm
While it’s not Thanksgiving, you can still go pumpkin picking. Now pumpkin picking can be your favorite summer activity since it’s an ongoing event. It’s taking place at Decker Farm in Staten Island’s Richmond Town. There’s 10 acres to pick pumpkins from but there’s also farm animals, hayrides and face painting making it a full day of activities.
