New York’s energy never stops, and is at its peak during summer. After a busy July, are you ready for August’s adventures?

1. Bryant Park: Summer Film Festival & Broadway

Every Monday night in summer you can take your blanket and go watch a movie on the lawn of Bryant Park, surrounded by the enlightened buildings. In order to get the best space, you should arrive near 5 p.m., although the movie won’t start until 9. Did I mention it is completely free? Now you have no reason not to go. The concept of this event is to show vintage or mythical movies. Whether it’s with your lover, your friends or your family, Bryant Park Summer Film Festival will offer you a great night.

August 3

Whether you’re in Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, or the Bronx, the heat is everywhere and luckily every neighborhood has public swimming pools to let you refresh.

Good to know: You should bring a padlock & towel, they are not complimentary.

Manhattan:

  • Dry Doc (408 E. 10th St, free) is ideal for kids.
  • Hamilton Fish Recreation Park (128 Pitt St. between Stanton and Houston, free) is a victim of its own success: it’s so crowded that it’s sometimes hard to find some space to swim.

Queens:

  • Astoria Park Pool (9th Street and 23rd Drive, free) is the biggest swimming pool of the city and offers a great view on the Upper East Side.

Brooklyn:

  • Red Hook Pool (Bay and Henry Streets, free) will allow you to take a dive while enjoying the beautiful Red Hook neighborhood.
  • McCarren Park Pool (Lorimer Street between Bayard Street and Driggs Avenue, free) can welcome 1500 people.

Bronx:

  • Crotona Pool (173rd Street and Fulton Avenue, free) is close to the Indian Lake.

3. Mostly Mozart Festival

This music festival happens every summer in NYC: Musicians play mostly Mozart, but also Schubert, Beethoven, Haendel… You can enjoy the concerts at the Lincoln Center, John Jay College Theater, Avery Fisher Hall, Alie Tully Hall or NY State Theatre.

August 1-2: “Paris” Symphony

August 4-5: Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony

August 8-9: Bells and Isserlis Play Brahms

August 11-12: Beethoven Violin Concerto

August 15-16: Brahms Symphony no. 1

August 18-19: Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto

Coney Island is a must-go during summer. Although I wouldn’t recommend the beach, you can enjoy many other activities on the peninsula. Luna Park is the center of Coney Island, the Cyclone roller coaster celebrates its 90th birthday this year (don’t worry, it has been renovated since), the Wonder Wheel is always a must but personally my favorite attraction was the flying chairs… No thrills, but magic. You will enjoy a beautiful view of the area while slowly flying with the wind in your hair. Ice cream, pizza, flip flops and bikinis: the atmosphere of Coney Island is unique. You can also visit the New York Aquarium, the children will love to see the penguins and the sea lions dancing. The Coney Island amphitheater offers good entertainment as well, check the programming here.

5. India Day Parade

The India Day Parade is one of the biggest Indian parades in the world and begins on Madison Avenue. It celebrates Indian Independence, that was won on August 15th, 1947. This makes it the 70th anniversary this year, so it might be even more memorable! The parade is followed by a fair and a banquet. More than 50,000 are estimated to attend this event that celebrates the unity of different ethnic groups in New York.

6. Harlem Week Festival

The Harlem Week Festival is a series of events from 30th of July to 26th of August which pays tribute to the culture of Harlem and celebrates the diversity of this historical quarter. Among those events, you will find concerts, an auto show, film festivals, sporting events, fashion shows, young programs and activities… No time to get bored! Find the programming here.

7. Jazz Age Lawn Party

The Jazz Age Lawn Party takes place on Governors Island during the last week-end of August. This event, created 12 years ago, offers you the opportunity to travel back in time and immerse in one of the most colorful and formative epochs in American history.
